In 2006, more than 31,000 people in the United States were treated for
injuries suffered while shoveling snow, reports the U.S. Consumer
Products Safety Commission. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons
offers these shoveling safety tips:
- warm up your muscles
- pace yourself
- use a shovel that is comfortable for your height and weight
- push the snow, don't lift it
- don't throw it over your shoulder or to the side.
